Durch die Mitteilungen von Schultz-Lupitz veranlaßt, hatte A.B. Frank im Jahr 1888 eine ausführliche Abhandlung über die Ernährung der Pflanze mit Stickstoff veröffentlicht, und bald darauf (1890) erschien sein Buch über die Pilzsymbiose der Leguminosen, in dem alle Erscheinungen: Infektion, Bildung und Zerfall der Knöllchen, Entstehung der hyphenartigen Gebilde und der Bakterioiden, sehr sorgfältig beschrieben wurden. Er nannte den Knöllchenerreger Rhizobium Leguminosarum, war aber noch nicht imstande, den Zusammenhang zwischen Rhizobium, Leguminose und Stickstoffgewinn vollständig aufzuklären (Möbius).

Original manuscript annotations on new lichens species. Harmand was author of the Lichens de France. In this small volume with his manuscript notes on lichens collected by Victor Demange, a cloth merchant and postcard dealer in Vietnam, he describes 82 lichens, of which 12 new species. These notes were later published in the Annales de cryptogamie exotique (1928). With loosely inserted part of a letter by mycologist J. Maheu.
