* A splendid book production of the magnificent flower paintings of Margaret Mee, with the paintings reproduced in their full size. Margaret Ursula Mee (1909-1988) left her native England for Brazil shortly after World War II. Her many excursions into the Amazon provided the subjects for her art, as well as the inspiration to advocate for preservation of the rainforest. "An intrepid Englishwoman, Margaret Ursula Mee … has made a unique artistic contribution to Brazilian botany by devoting the years 1952 to 1988 to painting in a living state the plants of the vanishing Amazonian rainforest. … Her paintings, scrupulously accurate botanically, are so well composed and so sensitive to form and texture that they stand as beautiful pictures in their own right; a number portray orchids and bromeliads, which cannot be adequately represented in herbaria, and some also portray their environment."
