All gardeners owe an infinite debt of gratitude to William Robinson - founder of The Garden (1871-1927) and Flora and Sylva (1903-05), and author of The English Flower Garden (1883, etc.) and other works - who helped to break the tyranny of formal bedding and, like Ruskin, drew attention to the beauties of the wild garden. Among the artists whom he employed was Henry Moon, who struck a new and personal, if not entirely healthy, note in botanical illustration. … (Blunt & Stearn). From 1880 Henry George Moon's plant portraits dominated the pages of The Garden, a popular horticultural publication. Renowned for his lifelike paintings of orchids, Moon appealed to Robinson because of his ability to sketch flowers in a graceful, naturalistic style. The subtle colourings of his paintings and simple arrangement of flowers were very unlike the more stylised renderings that appeared in competitors' publications. The beautiful colour-plates were lithographed and printed by the Belgian firm G. Severeyns and its successor J.L. Goffart, notable for their craftmanship.

Very rare monthly founded by Louis Benoît van Houtte and Charles François Antoine Morren. Not mentioned in the usual bibliographies (only in Stafleu & Cowan as composite works). The 119 nice hand-coloured plates are engravings or sometimes lithographs; the 78 plain plates are mostly delicate engravings of views and sometimes lithographs and folded. According to Balis and Lawalrée it is the first in a series of most successful and luxurious Belgian horticultural periodicals: "De periode na 1830 wordt in België gekenmerkt door een nauwe samenwerking tussen de kwekers en de vooraanstaande botanisten. Dank zij deze verenigde inspanning kon de Belgische tuinbouw zich los maken van de Engelse en onafhankelijk evolueren. De indrukwekkende reeks van tijdschriften, die uit deze collaboratie ontstaan is - L'Horticulteur belge is er het eerste voorbeeld van - vormt een van de mooiste en meest luxueuse monumenten van de Belgische boekdrukkunst" (Jan Balis & André Lawalrée: De orchidee in België p. 30).

The founder, publisher and part-editor of this lavish Belgian periodical was Louis van Houtte, the propietor of the largest nursery of its time on the continent. It appeared monthly for almost 40 years and was published by his own printing office in the middle of the gardens, the Horto van Houtteano. All the plants shown were for sale in his nursery and include many exotics. The work is notable for the craftmanship of the Belgian lithographers Severeyns, Stroobant and De Pannemaker, who had mastered the art of colour-printing from stone.

Pieter de la Court van der Voort [1664-1739], a cloth merchant at Leiden discusses in this book theoretical aspects of garden design. He published the book very late in his career, but practised his ideas certainly before 1700 at his estate 'Allemansgeest' (todays 'Berbice') at Voorschoten near Leiden. His father Pieter de la Court (1618-1685) was an influential politician who also had a taste for gardening. Besides a theoretical treatise De la Court also gives much practical information on gardening. He discusses amply the cultivation of the pineapple, one of his favourite subjects. He grew these plants in quantities and kept them during the winter in a heated glasshouse and in summer in the 'tan frame'. ... It is sometimes believed that Pieter de la Court sr. popularized pineapple growing in his day. This seems most unlikely as by the time of his death in 1685, the necessary facilities were hardly available, and the production of only a single fruit was nothing short of a miracle ... (Wijnands). The book of Pieter de la Court published after 50 years of experience in 1737, has a very long title, though with its accurate descriptions of the construction of greenhouses as well as the cultivation of pineapples, it seems to me to be one of the most important books of the 18th century concerning protected cultivation. Knoop also mentioned that Court was the inventer of the lean-to house (Muijzenberg). There are several editions of this work in Dutch (1737, 1763, 1766) and translations in German (1758) and in French (1750). The fine plates are by J.C. Philips and Jan Wandelaar (9 of citrus fruit, pineapples and a tuberose), J. v.d. Spyk, F. van Bleyswyck and unsigned (6 of a garden plan and greenhouses).

&c. A complete and very attractive set of this important Belgian periodical. A total of 35 volumes were produced by the Morrens, father and son, who respectively were professor of Botany at, and director of the Botanical gardens in Liège. With the death of the younger Morren in 1886 this journal, a family concern, died too. The 615 beautiful hand-coloured or chromolithographed plates are printed by G. Severeyns and L. & P. Stroobant. Short biographies are accompanied by 40 lithographed, etched or wood-engraved portraits of botanists and botanical artists (mostly frontispieces). Further illustrated with 61 plain or tinted (folding)non-botanical plates.
