Botanical Society of America exists to promote botany, the field of basic science dealing with the study and inquiry into the form, function, diversity, reproduction, evolution, and uses of plants and their interactions within the biosphere. International Plant Names Index (IPNI) is a database of the names and associated basic bibliographical details of all seed plants. Its goal is to eliminate the need for repeated reference to primary sources for basic bibliographic information about plant names. The data are freely available and are gradually being standardized and checked. IPNI will be a dynamic resource, depending on direct contributions by all members of the botanical community. IPNI is the product of a collaboration between the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the Harvard University Herbaria, and the Australian National Herbarium.

Special Collections Department of Wageningen UR Library administers the collection of rare and old books (printed before 1850), as well as old and modern maps and atlases, botanical and zoological illustrations, manuscripts, plates and photographs. It also houses TUIN, the Garden and Landscape Architecture Documentation Centre for the Netherlands. The main subjects in the department are agriculture, horticulture, forestry, livestock farming, garden and landscape design, and land reclamation (including maps and atlases). Topics are valuable collections of herbals and botanical books from the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and maps of Dutch polders. Besides the old books there are modern reference works, bibliographies and facsimiles.
