Family of 26 genera and about 350 species of woody plants in the Antarctic flora, with many laurifolia species with glossy leaves endemic to laurel forest habitat.

One of the great Belgian horticultural periodicals, published over 43 years. From 1854-1868 edited by Charles Lemaire and published by Ambroise Verschaffelt. In 1869 the Verschaffelt Établissement was bought up by Jean Jules Linden and the editorship went to Éduard André and ended in 1896. The work is finely illustrated by the Belgian lithographers L. & P. Stroobant who had mastered the art of colour-printing from stone.

Pierre Jean François Turpin (1775-1840) was possibly the greatest botanical genius of all the French botanical painters of his day … In particular, his drawings of botanical details have rarely been surpassed. ... (Blunt). With Pierre-Antoine Poiteau he collaborated in some of the most important botanical publications of the early years of the nineteenth century. In the finely illustrated botanical part of the Dictionnaire … the plates by several engravers were issued uncoloured or coloured.
