Les liliacées was Redouté’s largest and most ambitious work and is generally regarded as his masterpiece. The work of 8 volumes with 488 plates was produced under the patronage of the Empress Joséphine for whom Redouté worked as a botanical artists at Malmaison. The title is misleading as the work is of much broader scope, and includes the lily, amaryllis, iris, orchid and other plant families.
